CloudCUBE for Archaeology
Virtualgeo will propose new technologies for the documentation and analysis of cultural heritage in the congress “New researches and studies on the Saint Anastasia’s Urn”, which will take place on April 23rd 2009 at Burovich Cultural Centre in Sesto al Reghena (province of Pordenone, Italy).
Virtualgeo will illustrate in particular the laser scanning survey campaign with a T-Scan laser scanner of Leica Geosystems on the Saint Anastasia’s Urn (placed in the abbey church of Sesto al Reghena), the treatment with CloudCUBE software of the “point clouds” delivered by laser scanner and the various products elaborated starting from the collected data.
The scale plastic model produced with rapid prototyping printer as well as the videos of point clouds acquired and virtual reality applications concerning the Urn will be presented.

Laser scanning and CloudCUBE in extreme environments
The 2009 February issue of “American Surveyor Magazine”, the monthly magazine on surveying published in the USA, is also on line. The cover and the first pages of the magazine February issue are dedicated to the multidisciplinary project concerning the Mexican caves of Naica.
The article describes the geological setting, creation and evolution of the caves and their crystals. It goes into the difficulties of the speleological topographic survey and describes the advantages given by laser scanning technology.
The survey of two of the caves of Naica (Cueva de los Cristales and Cueva de las Espadas) performed by Virtualgeo is illustrated as application example of the use of laser scanner instrument in hypogeal contexts. “American Surveyor Magazine” explains how laser data were treated and elaborated to produce the first three-dimensional digital model of the Cave of the Crystals with CloudCUBE software.

Virtualgeo will present the new version of CloudCUBE 2009 at Intergeo 2008 taking place from September 30th to October 2nd in the fair ground of Bremen (Germany). Virtualgeo is in Hall 6, Stand 6.429.
Our technicians will be glad to present all the new potentialities of CloudCUBE 2009, which has important innovations. The visitors at Virtualgeo booth can have a DVD with the FREE DEMO VERSION of CloudCUBE 2009 (trial version).
The main innovations of CloudCUBE 2009 are:
- managing MORE THAN 500 million points in a single dwg;
- new functionalities to obtain automatically plans, sections, elevations, renderings of point clouds, axonometric projections, 3D model cutaways;
- new 3D modelling techniques with region entities;
- integration of laser scanning surveys and surveys carried out with traditional instruments (GPS, total station).

The July/August 2008 issue of “GEO:connexion International Magazine”, monthly publication for geospatial technologies professionals, dedicated its cover to Naica Project and the work carried out by Virtualgeo in such program of multidisciplinary research of international importance on the mine caves of Naica in Northern Mexico.
In the frame of Naica Project, which involves more than 40 experts from 17 universities and 2 research centres, Virtualgeo carried out the laser scanning survey of two caves covered with gypsum crystals using the proprietary software CloudCUBE to manage and 3D model the acquired point clouds.
The 3D reconstruction of morphology and crystals of the Cueva de los Cristales (which is the most spectacular of the surveyed caves) is the result of a pilot investigation which can be extended to any other context in which it has to be managed a remarkable morphological complexity and a large amount of survey data.

The Department of Mathematic Methods for Architecture organizes on the next 14th May at the conference hall of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Naples “Federico II”, CGKEvent, public meeting concerning 3D modelling techniques, real time 3D visualization and rendering applied on cultural heritage and architecture. The event aims at promoting the 2D and 3D computer graphics know-how with a series of reports of field experts belonging to university institutions and private companies.
Virtualgeo is attending CGKEvent to present the report: “Laser Scanning and Reverse Modelling, the New Survey Boundary. CloudCUBE: Integrated Software on Autocad® Platform for Managing Data Delivered by Laser Scanner”.

Survey technology based on the different scanning techniques has fully ripened. Nowadays it is possible to scan heterogeneous objects, basing on different and appropriate scanning techniques, then register the scans, interpret them directly in three-dimensions with complete modelling tools and obtain, at a rapid rate, from the 3D model all the dimensional information to support the study, monitoring and planning processes.
This is possible thanks to the hardware and software growth. Today hardware allows to scan with precision both underwater objects, e.g. with interferometric bathymetry, and objects above sea-level, with laser scanning systems. It is then possible to register the two scan types, making them effectively usable without distinction.
On the other side, even software has developed and today it is possible to model directly in three-dimensions on the point clouds acquired by laser scanning and/or interferometric bathymetry and than extract, easily and quickly, from the model the necessary dimensional information.

The edition of the 3rd April “Nova”, that is the weekly Thursday supplement of “Il Sole 24ORE” (the most important Italian financial newspaper) dedicated to research ad innovation, published an enquiry on cultural heritage, considered such as promoting value for research and economy, starting from the forum and brokerage event TECHA which took place in Rome (Italy) last 10th and 11th March. In the section dedicated to 3D graphic potentialities,
Virtualgeo‘s CloudCUBE was indicated as the first software of its type in Italy and in the first three existing at international level, working on AutoCAD® platform and allowing the management and 3D modelling of the “point clouds” delivered by laser scanning instruments.

CloudCUBE increases its potentialities with new tools for generating sections, elevations, axonometric projections and perspective cross-section view, starting from 3D models realized on point clouds acquired by laser scanner. Such tools make easier the study of the project and the creation of still more realistic visualizations, contemporarily reducing the realization times.
For any of your needs concerning the production of the main architectural representations, CloudCUBE is the software for you!
Nowadays the optimization of the work tools and human resources is
basic for guaranteeing quality and margins of profit. For this reason
CloudCUBE has been conceived and developed to provide a wide range of
possibilities in obtaining the main architectural representations,
according to the costs and realization times.
